In 1994, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) began publishing the National Directory of Farmers Markets which lists all farmers markets operating in the U.S. There are now more than 4,300 farmers' markets. Visit the growth chart - [1]

With 141 Ohio markets listed in the USDA directory, there are a growing number of identified farmers' markets in Ohio. In the past, counting farmers’ markets has been difficult because everything that is called a farmers’ market may not be one (Pyle, 1971, p.167) and there are various definitions and classifications of markets (Brown, 2001).
